Throughout the year we hear frequent exhortations to produce fruit and grow in the grace and the knowledge of Jesus Christ. They "truly are unleavened," he says, in the sense that they had repented and been justified through faith in the sacrifice of Christ. This "first day" is the first holy day of God's annual holy day season. So we have to go back before the throne of grace and plead for mercy and forgiveness again and again and again—even up until the time that we die or we are changed. There is a principle of Bible study (the law of first mention) that says, "The first time a thing—a word, a phrase—is mentioned in the Bible influences how it should be interpreted throughout." It is to this property of leaven that our Savior points when he speaks of the “leaven (that is, the corrupt doctrine) of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees,” Mat_16:6 and Paul, when he speaks of the “old leaven.” 1Co_5:7. It seems from the usage of these words that this woman is up to no good whatsoever.
